DMSO : the aprotic solvent that is safe to use and environmentally friendly


Numerous studies led by independent laboratories and Arkema have already proved that DMSO is man and environment friendly.

According to the European classification and labeling committee, DMSO is not labeled unlike DMF that is irritating, harmful and toxic,  NMP that is irritating and that is going to be labeled as toxic (proposal adopted by the 31st European classification and labeling committee ATP) and DMAC that is toxic.

  • Contrary to a widespread idea,  DMSO is as well absorbed and rapidly excreted in the urines as NMP.

Permeability through skin

  • DMSO is readily biodegradable and has very low acute toxicity for the aquatic organisms. Its biodegradability is 94% after 27 days (OECD guideline 310D). Consequently, it can be easily treated in a biological wastewater treatment unit.
