Our Products and Markets

The Kensington facility produces acrylic sheet products such as Plexiglas® and Plexiglas® SG sheets and polycarbonate sheet products such as Tuffak® sheet.

Plexiglas® acrylic sheet is used in many markets, including point of purchase displays, picture frames, mirrors and skylights. Tuffak® polycarbonate sheet can be seen as safety glazing windows in the transportation industry and in security applications.

Our History

The Altuglas International manufacturing plant of Arkema Inc., (formerly Atofina Chemicals, Inc.) in Kensington began making Plexiglas® acrylics (or molding resin) in 1975 as part of the Rohm and Haas Company. The operation continued in October 1992 after the formation of AtoHaas, when Rohm and Haas and Elf Atochem S.A. became joint venture partners. As of June 5, 1998 the Kensington plant is fully owned and operated by Arkema Inc.

The Kensington plant is located in the town of Berlin, located at the geographic center of the state of Connecticut. Eleven miles south of the state capitol in Hartford, residents also have easy access to Boston and New York via highway and rail connections. Central Connecticut also offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including golf, skiing, and many local and regional museums.

The plant currently employs 75 full-time people. We currently have many developmental activities in place focusing on new products so that we may be able to secure our future for years to come in Connecticut.

Commitment to Safety and the Environment

We are most proud of the accomplishments we’ve taken in the area of employee safety. By involving employees at all levels, and performing observations of the many tasks that are performed, we have successfully begun to change behavior. In so doing, we have made further progress in providing an injury free environment for all who work in Kensington.

The Kensington plant is also committed to reducing its impact on the environment. Recently, we participated in a project with Connecticut Light and Power that has allowed us to replace older equipment with newer, cleaner-running equipment. This has helped reduce our energy consumption.

Community Involvement

As a corporate citizen, we support many of the local organizations such as the Berlin Little League, Midget Football, Berlin Chamber of Commerce, Berlin economic development commission, CCARC and the United Way. We routinely participate in the Special Olympic Torch Run with our local police department, and provide our manufactured products to the Berlin First robotics program.

We also have developed exceptional working relationships with our neighbors, responding to any concerns they may have regarding their close proximity to our facility.
